The story of the Kingdom of Cambodia started at the begining christian era and developped under a strong Indian inflence, especially on religions, art and social organization level. The Khmer kingdom reached the top of it's power in the XIIth century, under Jayavarman VII's reign, builder of Angkor Thom.
After a long decline, following thai and vietnamese invasions, it's modern history has been damaged, after the French colonial system, by numerous years of civil wars and the sadly famous genocide under the khmers rouges regime driven by Pol Pot. The political instability seems to have finaly come to an end after the 1997 coup and today the country is trying to face his economical difficulties begin a serious developpement in the various industries like tourism, quicly increasing, especially in the Siem Reap province, where are the stunning and unique Angkor temples.
